Meet last year's winner: Zack DeeDat

Deedat’s winning sauce, Zaxx Hot Sauce, included habaneros, green and red chillies, mustard sauce, chilli powder and several astringents The judges loved how Deedat’s sauce had the perfect balance of heat and flavour.

“I haven’t changed the recipe at all since winning the competition. The sauce did well at chilli festivals last year and I have regular customers who ask for a bottle every month,” he says.

Deedat (below), from Bedfordview, Joburg says his chilli sauce making is still a home operation that he plays with in his spare time.

“I try to keep making the sauce as a hobby that I enjoy, rather than trying to work out how to preserve it and make it in big amounts commercially,” he said.
