My mother spent a few years living in Italy, during her career as a professional stage and ballet dancer. As a result my childhood was infused with stories of Italy, and family meals were primarily Italian cuisine.

Whenever I visit an Italian restaurant I think of her and try to view it through her eyes. So it’s no surprise that my family love our local Italian spot, Al Firenze. This quaint and cute spot in Ray Paul Drive, La Lucia, was established in 1988, and it’s all about family. At Al Firenze the Italian tradition of long, lazy lunches and sumptuous suppers comes into being, coupled with the familial ambiance that comes from being surrounded by the people you love.

But the comfort doesn’t end there. Diving into the menu – which we do a lot of during the holidays – feels like home all over again. The crusty, warm buns brought to the table before you eat are a delight all on their own. On that note, restaurants, up your game on the bun front – you could learn a thing or two from Al Firenze.

I’m no fan of seafood, but my fiancé is an unashamed fan of the avocado gamberi. For me, the caprese salad at Al Firenze always scores a solid 10 out of 10 – you’d be surprised at how many places get this simple dish so wrong. Moving on from starters, the menu is varied but keeps to the tradition of good cuisine that’s made with love. As for dessert, go straight to the cassata – it’s the best one I’ve ever tasted and I’ll order it every time.

When you arrive at Al Firenze, don’t forget to greet Chester, the dog who's probably seen every meal get eaten at this restaurant. If you’re lucky, he’ll take up residence by your feet as you eat – don’t worry – he’s excellent at keeping up with the dinnertime conversation. Call 031-572-5559.
