'Original Banting lists just one person's opinion'

Chef Jonno Proudfoot on how his new book, 'The Real Meal Revolution Banting 2.0', improves on SA's original Banting 'bible'

Our first book, The Real Meal Revolution, which is about following a Banting (high fat/low carbohydrate) lifestyle, was way too wide and broad. People looked at the recipes in the book as the diet; but the lists (of foods) in the book and carbohydrate intake are the diet. The recipes are supplementary.
Our intention with Real Meal Revolution Banting 2.0 was to create a framework for people to follow. We run an online healthy eating programme and by doing this book we want everyone to be singing from the same hymn sheet.
In this book we focus on a healthy lifestyle and include a comprehensive colour-coded food list - green (eat to hunger), orange (exercise self-control), light red (hardly ever) and very red (never ever).
In changing the food lists from the first book we could cast some doubt on the theory of the Banting and LCHF lifestyle. The original list was one person's opinion and the new list is the opinion and research of our team of 30 people and 2,000 clients.
What started me out on the Banting path? Kate, my then girlfriend (and now wife) was obsessed with optimising the human condition with food and when she lost 20kg on the "Noakes" diet the effects were dramatic and the logic compelling. What's more, the food was delicious, even decadent. I realised I had found the angle for my cookbook, The Real Meal Revolution.I wouldn't say there was a split between the authors of the first Real Meal Revolution book. It was really just a continuation of life, and when writing this book, Real Meal Revolution Banting 2.0, we decided to part ways. They (Tim Noakes, Sally-Ann Creed and David Grier) needed their strategy, and we needed ours.
I follow the LCHF diet and usually skip breakfast. For dinner we like grilled fish with green veggies. I don't eat Banting baked goods. They are not good for weight loss and they don't taste very nice. I drink lots of water and non-caffeinated teas.
The things I miss the most are crispy deep-fried carbohydrates - think duck spring roll with plum sauce, tempura prawns, wood-fired pizza ...
