South African cuisine is a melting pot of flavours as the menu at Afro-Boer proves

THE VIBE
Afro-Boer's interior balances light, bright, vintage décor with touches of Africa - a space where owner Michelle Cibulka-Cronje says she can wear a Madiba T-shirt while nibbling boerbeskuit and listening to Ladysmith Black Mambazo. She is an African in heart and soul, a travelling boeremeisie with her heart firmly grounded in South Africa ... an afro-boer.Situated on Lynnwood Road, just off Solomon Mahlangu Boulevard, the space is tranquil and inviting with beautifully maintained gardens and large trees.
The restaurant consists of various spaces, both inside and out, each with its own vibe. Lounge on the immaculate lawn for a picnic, or just sip a fabulous drink on the veranda, and enjoy this beautiful country.THE FOOD
The "boerie" sandwich consists of thin boerewors, chakalaka and horseradish sauce on various bread choices (R70), while the smoked chicken, guava relish and rocket also celebrates its local roots in a modern way.
Other items from the local repertoire include deliciously flavourful pickled fish, biltong carpaccio, and frikkadels.
For breakfast, the options are hearty tummy-fillers such as eggs, pap and boerewors (R70), or kaiings - a traditional treat of morsels of crispy fried pork or sheep fat - with whipped moskonfyt and putu pap (R50).
For something slightly more virtuous, ouma's traditional farm-style fishcakes with chunky salad (R65) should hit the spot.HOT TIP
It is essentially a bakery with an eatery attached, so you can place an advance order for celebratory cakes.
The beautiful garden is perfect for picnics under the trees, which can also be ordered in advance.VISIT
