Rich pickings: harvest your own fresh fruit at Calitzdorp's De Krans farm

03 December 2017 - 00:00 By Staff reporter

Dripping with fruit trees and grape vines, De Krans in Calitzdorp is more than a wine find. With the stone fruit season upon us, the farm is offering a variety of pick-your-own opportunities.
The season for delicious Oom Sarel cling peaches (R8/kg) starts on December 16 and runs to the end of the month. Apart from a great day out with the family, for those who make preserves and jams, it's an opportunity to pick up a glut of fruit at a fraction of the price in the supermarket. You can also laze in the shade of the trellised hanepoot vineyard with a glass of wine or enjoy light meals in the deli and bistro.
Open seven days a week, it's casual, cool and a lovely spot to while away the time.
In early February you can pick your own hanepoot grapes (R7.50/kg); the season should last till March 4. Be aware the dates are weather dependent, and may change at short notice...
