HOW WE CONDUCTED OUR TASTE TEST

IT'S FREE AND FAIR!

The Taste & Tell series is a monthly feature where the same or similar supermarket items are put to a taste test by a panel. (This one was made up of teachers from Bryanston High School.)

We work with chefs who assist with any preparation that's necessary. Items are categorised, numbered and stripped of all their packaging before being served. A food expert in the kitchen oversees the entire process.

The tasters undertake a blind tasting and the food is judged on a score sheet and is rated according to appearance, taste, quality of ingredients and whether the taster would consider buying the product. Each category is judged out of 10 points: 10 is excellent, 5 average and 1 extremely poor.

An auditor checks each score sheet and collates the results.

THE RESULTS

FIRST PLACE: PICK N PAY

Price: 2 litres for R44.99

What the judges said:

  • Phuti: Very rich and creamy. Very smooth and decadent. Worth every cent.
  • Mia: Creamy and smooth. Chocolate ice cream very tasty.
  • Adam: Wow, delicious, creamy with good flavour.

SECOND PLACE: WOOLWORTHS

Soft Scoop Caramel, Chocolate and Vanilla Flavoured Ice Cream

Price: 2 litres for R59.99

What the judges said:

  • Bronwyn: Absolutely delicious, perfect consistency except this ice cream has no caramel in it.
  • Dean: The chocolate flavour was the best of all samples but felt let down by the vanilla ice cream.
  • Sam: Has a Bar One flavour, this is the real McCoy but unfortunately no caramel in this ice cream.

THIRD PLACE: SPAR

Vanilla and Chocolate Flavoured Ice Cream

Price: 2 litres for R51.99

What the judges said:

  • Dean: Chocolate sauce was nice. Chocolate ice cream not rich enough.
  • Brad: Flavourless and airy. Chocolate could have more flavour.
  • Yvonne: Lacking in flavour, texture too spongy and sugary.

FOURTH PLACE: CHECKERS

Spoonfuls Caramel, Vanilla Flavoured and Chocolate Ice Cream

Price: 2 litres for R49.99

What the judges said:

  • Wian: Fluffy texture and there are ice crystals in the ice cream.
  • Brad: Grainy, like ice crystals. I almost had to chew it.
  • Adam: Grainy but very flavoursome.
