This Easter, chocolate eggs are crazier, cooler and more Instagram-worthy than ever before, thanks to the alchemists at The JackRabbit Chocolate Studio in Pretoria.

Director of the award-winning artisinal brand Stephanie Ceronio says they wanted to bring something different to this year's holiday celebrations. "We thought we'd do something fantastical."

Rather than being run-of-the-mill chocolate chicken eggs, JackRabbit's creations were "laid' by dinosaurs and dragons — and they look the part.

There are ribbed eggs reminiscent of old-school wooden spinning tops and decidedly modern ones with geometric facets. Colours range from the palest pink to a vibrant turquoise speckled with flecks of gold.

"We decided to go with dinosaur eggs because they're really interactive for kids, and kids are a really big part of Easter," says Ceronio. It was her nine-year-old daughter's complaint that chocolate eggs were boring that inspired her to make these eggs 'hatch': inside you'll find a couple of dinosaur-shaped, fruit-flavoured gummy sweets.

Their dragon eggs, on the other hand, were made to appeal to adults and were inspired by the recent release of the much-hyped final season of Game of Thrones.

GoT fans are also sure to go crazy for another of their confections: Dragon's Breath Puffs. Made of meringue, ice and liquid nitrogen, these frozen treats are so cold they allow you to blow out little puffs of smoke — just like one of Daenerys's "children' — while eating them.

"Dragon's Breath is super cool and it’s such a fun gimmicky type of thing," says Ceronio. "I was surprised nobody had done it here before because it was such a huge international trend. We just kind of had to MacGyver it."

The limitations of working with liquid nitrogen mean that these Puffs are only available at JackRabbit HQ in the Waterkloof Heights Shopping Centre, although the brand will be selling their other Easter goods at pop-ups at the Mall of Africa and Brooklyn Mall this weekend.

While you're at one of these malls, head over to the Lucky Bread Company to taste another of JackRabbit's creations. The brands partnered to create a treat called "Egg 'n soldiers Easter style".

The hero of the dish is a hand-crafted chocolate egg, which is filled with custard and mango mousse, mimicking the look of an egg yoke and white. It's served with "soldiers" made from toasted hot cross buns for dipping. Yum!
