The survey came about as a means to discover which was the world’s most sex-positive city. In this case, sex-positive means having "open, tolerant, or progressive attitudes towards sex and sexuality".
The criteria they based this on included sexual activity, sexual experimentation, sex toy consumption, LGBTQ friendliness, access to contraception and how big the swingers’ scene was, among others.
Over 200 hundred cities were surveyed and distilled into a top 100 list.
The City of Gold came in at number 52, followed closely by Cape Town which took the 53rd spot. Durban also featured, ranking 68th.
While Capetonians were found to be more sexually experimental than those on the Highveld, Joburgers consumed slightly more sex toys and were significantly more sexually active, ranking 10th in the world.
They also have a soft spot for retired porn star Lisa Ann, who popped up as Johannesburg’s most-searched porn term. In Cape Town and Durban, porn fans commonly searched for 'Milf' and 'Indian' respectively.
Durbanites were found to be the country's biggest consumers of porn; the coastal city was also found to have the largest swingers' scene.
Paris was crowned the world's most sex-positive city coming in at number 1, followed by Rio de Janeiro, London, Los Angeles and Berlin.
The world's least sexually liberated city is Cork in Ireland, though Bratislava in Slovakia and Belgrade in Serbia are not far off.
