Q. I thought oestrogen therapy was only for females but I have seen a man take it too. Why would it be prescribed for a man?
A. The importance of oestrogen in the reproductive system is almost always discussed in relation to women's health, but the hormone is also important for men, for example in prostate cancer treatment.
It is also used in male-to-female transgender therapy. A person who is in transition therapy may take oestrogen in various forms over time and will need to remain on hormonal therapy for as long as they want the desired effects.
Without knowing the background medical history, age and current medical condition, it is not possible to know the exact medical indication in this specific case.
The dose and preparation does differ and the hormone therapy must be individualised.
It is important to monitor the effect of hormones on cancer risk, among other health concerns.Oestrogens were once the main alternative to surgery in advanced prostate cancer. However, due to their possible side-effects, including heart disease, enlarged breasts (gynecomastia), diabetes and high lipids, they have been replaced by androgen deprivation or suppression therapy - this seeks to reduce the levels of male hormones, called androgens, in the body.
If you are concerned about a loved one's health, please encourage them to see their healthcare provider.
