Outdoor showers and hot tubs can be as practical as they are fun. Here's how...

As the weather changes and temperatures begin to rise, many of us will be spending more time outdoors. To make the best of your space, why not consider updating your outdoor area to include an outdoor shower or hot tub?

While outdoor showers seem to be a peculiar home addition, they can be as practical as they are luxurious.

According to Rui Gavina of Giobella, outdoor showers are normally found in coastal or warmer parts of the country, and are often located outside the main bedroom of the house or cottage, or near the swimming pool. Rui says: “They are used for a quick summer shower after a hard workout or fun in the pool.”

But cooling down after a workout or rinsing off chlorine and beach sand aren’t the only reasons why home owners install outdoor showers. For some, it’s a way to commune with nature; the idea of getting clean and ready for the day ahead in an open-air shower, with nothing but the smell of freshly cut grass, views of their surrounds and the sound of birds, is simply tantalising.

Hot tubs, which are usually situated either on the patio near the pool or as part of the master bedroom, are the more popular choice. Christelle Steyn of Lifestyle Ceramics says a two to six-seater hydrotherapy hot tub is the most popular among her clients, because “a hydrotherapy hot tub, in conjunction with ozone, is amazing at removing toxins and stress.

It also helps with circulation, leaving your skin glowing.” Whatever you decide, comfort and functionality should always guide your choice.
