Design destination: The Silo hotel, Cape Town

Since opening in March this year, The Silo Hotel at the V&A Waterfront has held its place as a talking point for design aficionados and travel junkies alike.
Hardly surprising, considering world-famous architect Thomas Heatherwick was at the helm of converting this disused heritage building into a striking contemporary space.
The hotel sits atop what will soon be Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), a museum housing the single largest collection of contemporary African art in the world.
Heatherwick Studio's brief was to reimagine the Grain Silo Complex with a uniquely African architectural intervention inspired by its own historic character. The most striking feature of the hotel is undoubtedly its pillowed glass windows, which bulge outward as if gently inflated, pulling you towards the panoramic views of Table Mountain and Robben Island.
The hotel has 28 rooms, including a spectacular penthouse, as well as The Silo Spa, The Willaston Bar, the Granary Café on the sixth floor, and a rooftop bar and restaurant.
Liz Biden, owner of The Royal Portfolio group, which owns the hotel, designed and decorated the interiors, making each of the rooms unique. "The building is modern and industrial so the interior design contrasts that with the addition of comfortable, colourful and playful touches," she says.
DID YOU KNOW?The historic grain silo building, which was built in 1924, was for a time the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa, at 57m high...
