REFLECTIONS: GARDENS
By Roads Publishers, R990
A visual exploration of some of the world's most beautiful gardens and how they mirror the history, culture and architecture of the society that cultivated them.
Illustrated with exceptional photography, the book celebrates the striking contrast and variety that exists in the world's green spaces, from the futuristic aesthetic of Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, to the colourful splendour of Morocco's Jardin Majorelle, and the old-world wonder of Het Loo's Gelderland in the Netherlands.
Along with celebrated gardens, it explores large-scale urban green spaces such as New York's Central Park and conservation projects such as Cornwall's Eden Project, giving detailed information on every space featured.THE ART OF FLORA FORAGER
By Bridget Beth Collins, Sasquatch Books, R390
Flower fans and nature enthusiasts will fall in love with this charming book from Instagram sensation Flora Forager, aka Bridget Beth Collins, which features the best of her unique floral compositions.
Collins creates images out of flower petals, leaves, stones, twigs and other natural materials found in her garden and urban wild areas in her Seattle neighbourhood. Her images include mandalas, animals, birds, fish, insects, mythical creatures, iconic women, old masters and more.
This whimsical book collects her best pieces and gives readers a peek into her creative process. Each artwork is accompanied by text which lists her materials and a description of her process and inspiration.THE ADVENTURES OF A HONEYBEE IN PARIS
By Sanet Stegmann, available via shakespeareandcompany.com, R235
Written and illustrated by SA designer Sanet Stegmann of Kassa Studio, we couldn't resist including this book.
Stegmann moved to Paris in 2015 and, inspired by the city's art, culture, architecture, music and people, the idea for a children's book crept into her imagination. While getting to know the city, mostly on foot, she began to document places that caught her attention.
Armed with watercolours and inkpot, she created the story of a honeybee named Clemence and her adventures through the City of Lights.
The book is self-published, allowing Stegmann full artistic control - from selecting the paper to the size and shape of the book.BLIND SPOT
By Teju Cole, Faber & Faber, R420
This work brings together words and images in a way that has led to it being named one of Time's best non-fiction books of 2017.
A photography critic and acclaimed writer, Cole combines his two passions in this beautifully published tome.
His photos take readers on a journey through countries as diverse as Indonesia and Switzerland, and while you may expect tourist attractions and seascapes to be the central focus, this is not the case.
Cole homes in on a detail, a delos on the promenade in Beirut or a van outside a Nuremberg church, and muses over the image, sharing, in his poetic way, the memories or ideas it evokes for him.
Imaginatively photographed and lyrically written, it is a testament to the art of seeing...
