Call me a cynic, but when I heard Kate Moss had launched a wallpaper I was expecting to be underwhelmed. I was wrong. Moss's design for de Gournay is as beguiling as the model herself.
A favourite with interior designers, de Gournay produces hand-painted wallpapers that grace hotels, restaurants and private homes around the world. The wall panels are made to fit the exact proportions of each room and its creative team, led by Jemma Cave, produces bespoke designs.Cave spent time with Moss at her London home, developing a design depicting cascading anemone blooms against a dark background. Dubbed "Dusk", it hangs in her bathroom.
"Jemma would come over with paints. I was surprised how satisfied I felt unrolling the first finished panel, " says Moss.
Once designed, the papers are painted in de Gournay's Shanghai workshop using a traditional technique.
The Kate Moss Anemones in Light paper is to become part of de Gournay's permanent collection, which is available locally from St Leger & Viney.
TALKING INTERIOR DESIGN WITH KATE MOSS
Kate Moss and de Gournay founder Claud Cecil Gurney offer their views and opinions on the collaboration
How did the collaboration between de Gournay and Kate Moss come about?
CCG: It was destined to happen since 2000, after I'd spent hours waiting for her in her bathroom to discuss decorating her home with my 13-year-old daughter, who was desperate to meet her. She never appeared, which increased our desire to meet and work with her.
Seventeen years later it happened. We were summoned to a bathroom where Kate appeared and we found out what a charismatic, charming person she is.
What prompted you to do an interiors collaboration?
KM: I have worked with [interior designer] Katie Grove on numerous interiors projects. We both love de Gournay and approached them with the idea of collaboration.
How would you describe your interiors style and does it mirror your fashion style?
KM: My interiors style is drawn from different eras, mixing old with new, custom pieces with found treasures, like the mix of couture with second hand. It's also how I like to dress.Does bespoke wallpaper add to a room?
KM: Yes, it adds warmth, texture, dimension and drama. It can transport you to another place. It lifts the soul.
What inspired your de Gournay wallpaper design? What was the starting point?
KM: Twilight was the working title for the initial design. I love this time of day. This wallpaper is timeless in that you don't really know what time of day it is. Sunrise and sunset are equally gorgeous, and the paper changes depending on the time of day.
Describe the mood your wallpaper evokes
KM: This colour way is inspired by Film Noir, very monochromatic, and as my bathroom is totally silver it seemed fitting to hang it there.
CCG: The mood depends on the colourway. The one in Kate's bathroom evokes glamour and Hollywood.
Which designers would you like to see using your de Gournay wallpaper?
KM: Anyone fabulous.
Do you think the worlds of fashion and interiors are colliding?
KM: Yes, they always have. - The Telegraph, London..
