What should you consider when buying outdoor furniture?
To the untrained eye, all outdoor furniture might look the same, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Quality of materials and construction is key to buying furniture that lasts.
Consider whether you are looking for patio furniture or outdoor furniture. Most outdoor furniture is made to reside undercover on a patio. It is not made to withstand the day-to-day wear and tear of the harsh South African climate and exposure to rain, particularly the cushions.The best materials for outdoor furniture?
The classic notion of outdoor furniture is the all-weather wicker design which offers a traditional look and is resistant to UV and rain.
That said, more recent designs push the boundaries in terms of what is possible and there is now a wide range to choose from. You can choose from engineered rattan to sleek glass and aluminium through to fully upholstered furniture with the latest technical fabrics.
If you love the look of wood, wooden tops placed over an aluminium frame will guarantee longevity - and you can avoid the constant maintenance associated with all-wood furniture.
Advice for maintaining outdoor furniture?
It should be easy to maintain, so avoid anything that requires maintenance. Who has the time to scrub, clean and oil their furniture? If your outdoor furniture is made from the right quality materials, cleaning will be a breeze.
Make sure you get a clear idea from the store about what kind of care the furniture requires and what to do in case of a coffee or wine spill.Speaking of wine spills, any tips for cleaning your furniture without damaging it?
In most cases, a soft damp cloth should be sufficient to clean your furniture. Cushions can simply be patted to get rid of dust that may have settled on them.
If there are stubborn stains, we recommend furniture cleaner, but avoid abrasive cleaning materials.
