'Culture influences my creativity': Mpho Vaicker tells stories through her designs
We catch up with product designer Mpho Vackier, creative director of TheUrbanative design studio
How would you describe TheUrbanative?
We see our pieces as a celebration of culture, as we reinterpret graphic cultural signs to communicate across generations and nationalities.
How did you end up in design?
I originally studied extraction metallurgy, but I knew I would eventually want to do something more creative. A few years ago, I had the opportunity to study full time, so I quit my job as a process engineer and studied interior design.
I started my interior design company, DesignPeo (Peo meaning seed in Setswana) in 2015 and last year I launched a furniture range under the TheUrbanative brand.Collaboration is important to you. Tell us about this.
I love collaboration as I believe we can do more as a collective. In collaborations you get to play off each other’s strengths, which results in original creations.Someone you’d love to collaborate with, and why?
I am obsessed with Kelly Wearstler and would love to do a collaborative project with her. I love her fun and bold approach to furniture and product design; her knowledge and respect of materials, and the fact that she pushes boundaries with the materials she uses. Her work is fun and tells a story. I love that.
What do you think of the SA design scene?
I love how we are using our cultures, backgrounds and inspirations to tell amazing stories about ourselves as South African designers through design. There is a vibrancy and authenticity in most of the products and the level is constantly elevating.
I also love the communities of supportive designers, curators and mentors I have met andworked with.
A piece you’d love to make?
Something that incorporates technology but is still distinctly in the style of TheUrbanative.
A colour you couldn’t live without?
Blue is my favourite colour, and has snuck in to some of my designs.
Good design is …
Innovative, simple, and authentic.
A design tip for readers?
