Bathroom décor trends are displaying a strong African aesthetic

Kohler's Ronelle Badenhorst talks us through the latest bathroom décor trends and the company's decision to enter the South African market

What are South African homeowners looking for in bathroom design?
Local trends mirror global ones to a large extent, particularly what's happening in Europe.
South Africans tend to veer towards minimalism and contemporary design lines, but there is an increasing African influence coming through. Finding ways to incorporate African motifs and organic patterns is an interesting visual and product proposition.
We recently worked with designer Nelson Kubheka, who created a beautiful space for us at Design Joburg, combining Kohler products with a strong African aesthetic. 
What are some international trends, and how are they being adopted locally?
A great example is simple embellishment in metallic tones. People are becoming bolder in design choices for the bathroom. There's a preference for brassware, and sanitaryware that moves away from the conventional and clinical white-and-chrome look.
Colour is coming back, and we are seeing an increase in demand for black, grey and metallic tones.What prompted the decision for Kohler to set up in SA?
It's an important market with a growing segment of consumers who insist on high-end, design-conscious bathrooms in their homes.What sets Kohler apart in its design offering?
We believe in being at the leading edge of design and technology. We're determined to build products that will remain relevant from a design perspective. This also applies to technology and its role in the bathroom space. We're working on connected platforms with intelligent products that communicate with each other.
Has the focus on sustainability caused you to look at your approach differently?
We've had a multipronged approach to this across several sectors. Accessibility to clean water affects everyone, so we've launched a water filter called Clarity that was developed to provide easy access to clean drinking water, especially in areas affected by water scarcity.
Our shower technology is also leading the way here: our Katalyst air-induction technology infuses 2l of air a minute into the water droplets, making them larger and warmer for a more luxurious shower experience that simultaneously reduces water consumption...
