Last week saw singer Pharrell Williams announce a collaboration with Chanel at the presentation of their Cruise 2018/2019 collection in Bangkok, Thailand.

No stranger to working with the biggest names in fashion, few have a resume as illustrious as Williams. He has launched his own brands Billionaire Boys and Ice Cream, modelled for Louis Vuitton, had a successful collaboration with Adidas Originals and is a part owner of G-Star Raw. It’s safe to say he is one of the industry’s most sought after (and profitable) muses and collaborators.

Williams has worked for Chanel before. He appeared in campaigns for the Gabrielle handbag line and produced music alongside Cara Delevingne for a film to accompany its Paris-Salzburg show for pre-fall 2015. He is a constant fixture in the front row of their shows. However, the closest he has got to a collaboration was last year’s limited run of his line of Adidas Originals NMD branded with the fashion house’s distinctive logo.

Details around the collection are few and far between, with limited information from Chanel pointing to a debut at its Seoul, South Korea, boutique on March 29, followed by a worldwide release on April 4.

We have only the yellow embellished hoodie worn by Williams at last weeks show to give us clues, however, having studied his sartorial track record, we can predict what to expect from the collection.

MORE MENSWEAR

While this is not the first time that Chanel has produced menswear, it has never been a focus. Having been snapped in multiple custom men’s looks at various past events as well as for Chanels own shows, there’s no doubt Williams’ collection will have offerings for men too. Pieces that couples can swap with one another are strongly anticipated.

LESS IS (NOT) MORE

“Minimal” is not the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Williams’ style. For him bold has always been better, so we can expect a series of strong maximalist looks.

COUTURE-LEVEL STREETWEAR

This collaboration makes a great deal of sense for a number of reasons but the most obvious is that Chanel wants to attract younger buyers, who are purchasing more street-friendly than couture garments. Williams’ success with his own brands and collaborations points to a couture-quality (and priced) line of ultra-luxe and exclusive streetwear pieces.

We can bank on seeing a few drool-worthy kicks featuring the iconic interlocking Cs, a healthy selection of Japanese denims, some vintage inspired tees, an assortment of hoodies and sweats, as well as bomber jackets in the famous tweed.

ACCESSORIES AND JEWELS

With an archive of incredible jewellery, bags and other accessories to draw inspiration from, and having a penchant for the famous pearls, there’s no doubt we’ll see Williams stretch his skills into accessories and jewellery.
