While adidas is no stranger to working with some of the biggest names in the fashion industry, their ongoing collaboration with Alexander Wang has always been something to get excited about. Now in its fourth iteration, Wang has solidified his strong design language through his collaborative efforts with Originals, staying loyal to the brand, while retaining his signature subversive style.

The inverted trefoil has become the logo for the partnership but deconstructed and given new life. Season 4 consists of 18 unisex pieces, including tops, track pants, dresses, tees, shorts and footwear.

For the first time, this exclusive (and elusive) collaboration is available locally. Photographer and art director Xzavier Zulu has captured this in his own unique way, together with NTWRK AREA3 - a local creative platform that champions content creation and storytelling based on Instagram.

“The collection revisits past collaborations and gives them new life, as well as challenging classics like the Superstar, in the shape of the Skate Super. This process speaks to all that I do in upcycling but also helps educate a new consumer to the past and teases (Wang’s) idea of tomorrow for brand staples,” said Zulu of Season 4.

Of his creative process, Zulu said: “Frankensteining is at the core of all that I do as a creator and I feel the collection speaks to that single principle.

“My voice was essentially born from a lack of skills and resources, though matched by a hunger and growing understanding of self to then channel, through various creative expressions, that which today sees me create this lookbook highlighting the fourth season of adidas Originals by Alexander Wang.

I actioned what I dreamt: UV lights, tints of blue, sweaty faces, dark moods and so on

“A lot of what I create comes from dreams or ‘visions’ and, not to be over-dramatic or anything, but whenever things come to me, I … see it to be a message from my ancestors, or what I jokingly call ‘Creative Gods’, affirming my beliefs and purpose. This was no different and I actioned what I dreamt: UV lights, tints of blue, sweaty faces, dark moods and so on.

“Second to that is my love of iPhoneography and VSCO, two things I’ve made my beginning and end of content creation, and so I played to this as a strength. The team I worked with made it all easy too. I’m slowly developing a team of people that I can grow with and can grow my own understanding of my voice.”

• adidas Originals by Alexander Wang is available at shop.adidas.co.za. The clothing is priced from R1,799, and the footwear from R3,299.
