STYLE
It's a hotel that makes you feel at home, with spacious, comfortable rooms, modern wood furniture and glorious mountain views.
FACILITIES
There is a gym, swimming pools (one heated), a spa, golf, tennis and squash courts along with marked hiking trails to San rock paintings and waterfalls. Guests also have access to free guided hikes.
In addition, there is bird watching, a huge outdoor chess board, archery, horse and pony rides, mountain-bike trails, a marked jogging route, a 10m climbing tower and fly fishing.EXPERIENCE
It can literally be anything you want it to be. If you are looking for a place of relaxation, it's nice and quiet. You can just sit and enjoy the views, read and sleep the whole day.
If you are looking for adventure, like I was, you'll find it here.
THE EATING
For those who love quality over quantity, buffets aren't usually the best. However, the Cathedral Peak Hotel smashes this stereotype.
Maybe it's the warm and welcoming staff or maybe they just have the best chefs. It's probably both. Whatever it is, they are doing it right.THE 'DO' LIST
If you like to wake up to a good cup of tea and a few pages of a good book, be sure to indulge in this with those mountain views as the backdrop.
Horse riding is an energising way to explore your surroundings.
Also, do remind yourself how it feels to be a child again and go for a one-hour quad-biking experience which is definitely worth it as the path set aside for it has all kinds of up and down, smooth and bumpy slopes designed to make sure you have loads of fun.
Lastly, for the most dramatic Drakensberg views, go for a helicopter flip and take in your nature with a hint of heaven.
BEST TIME TO GO
If you're a winter lover like me, go then. Forget the cold - a big, warm jacket can solve that. When the ice sets on those mountains and you go on a helicopter ride to see it all from above, it's a glorious place to be. And you can always rush back to your room for a hot bath afterwards...
