Hotel Review: Holiday Inn, Rosebank

Shanthini Naidoo finds the hotel is far more elegant than its three stars would imply, with all the shops and restaurants of this trendy Johannesburg neighbourhood right at its door

LOCATION
This might be the perfect location for out-of-towners. Away from Sandton CBD, it is across the road from the less-frequented Rosebank Gautrain station.
The area is trendy and tourist-friendly but also gives access to greater Johannesburg. Near highways and byways, hubs like Maboneng and central Joburg, Melrose Arch and Sandton are accessible by car and train.
STYLEIn shades of gilded beige and occasional deep red, it is smart, even elegant, which you might not expect from this trustworthy old name in the hotel business - and a three-star.The restaurant, Velvet, with its pleasing water-wall and ostrich-skin seats, is fine for meal time. Rooms are neat and well-kitted with essentials like the good linen, and extras like high-backed chairs and business desks.
Abstract mass-produced art could distract a visitor from the goings-on outside in the mall area and the busy main road.
SERVICE
On point. Easy check-in and out, good security and unhurried faces to greet you for breakfast.
HOW'S THE GRUB?
Lunches and dinners are available, and there is a cocktail bar or poolside terrace menu, but we dined out in the balmy holiday evenings, with heaps of offerings in Rosebank and the Firs. The Grillhouse steakhouse is an option for dinner.Breakfast is a highlight and it has all the higher-end extras. Special add-ons include the waffle maker with heaps of whipped cream that had kids' eyes popping.
Resort-style, there is an omelette station manned by an egg-chef who created fluffy treats.
ACTIVITIES
Hop on a Gautrain to head out of the area but Rosebank Mall and The Zone nearby have movies, games for kids, window-tasting of gourmet popcorn or home-made ice cream.
Shopping without crowds and a selection of high-street stores, interesting artiste types to people-gaze at, a shoe shiner whom everyone knows by name (you'll have to meet him yourself), and the flea market for tourists, and locals who know this is where to find the best handmade jewellery.
Stay in for free wifi and tea. A business centre, gym and meeting rooms are available.
BEST TIME TO GO?
All year round.
