HOTEL REVIEW | The President Hotel, Cape Town

The best part of this family-friendly hotel is the view with the ocean out front and mountains in the back, says Claire Keeton

LOCATION
With glimpses of the Atlantic Ocean outfront, the 12 Apostles of the Table Mountain National Park behind and only 6km to Cape Town’s CBD, this family-friendly hotel is perfect for getting lost in nature and the city.
STYLE
Renovated in October, the hotel has a modern gloss with African-influenced features . The Point lounge and deck and the owner ’s lounge and deck, reception and kiddies’ play area show the deft style of architect Justin Raath.
Each floor has a photo art theme, such as the ocean, culture or Madiba.
My suite had an uncluttered, spacious living area with a couch, kitchenette and a large flat-screen TV.
SERVICE
The staff are unobtrusive but efficient, blending into the unpretentious mood of the hotel. The rising star of the President’s six floors is Roxy — the new speech-enabled concierge service.
The in-room service will take the place of elements like the alarm clock and hotel manual. Roxy is being put through her paces and once she has learned to recognise different local accents better —she will be rolled out to all rooms.
FACILITIES
The hotel is family friendly, with welcome packs and menus for kids, an entertainment area with a jumping castle, ball pit, teepees, jungle gym and dedicated child minders.
With its new loyalty programme, the hotel welcomes travellers and local families.
HOW’S THE GRUB?
With award-winning chefs on its team, led by head chef Phil Alcock, the revamped menu is another reason to seek an audience with the President.
The tapas and Asian fusion dishes are delicious, as the hotel shifts to more à la carte-style dining.
The hotel also offers gourmet pizzas for summer evenings around the pool, where the pizza oven is located.
The breakfast buffet, which includes fresh fruit, an excellent cooked breakfast and home-made pastries, has everything guests could ever want.
ACTIVITIES
Cape Town is an active traveller’s paradise, with plenty of options near the hotel. Hike Table Mountain or Lion’s Head, or paddle a kayak off Mouille Point and maybe see some whales.
Cycle the city paths or take a mountain bike to Kirstenbosch botanical gardens.
If rest is what you need, simply put your feet up on the Point Deck and watch the ocean.
BEST TIME TO GO
Summer in Cape Town can be hot but the hotel is cooled by the sea breeze and the rooms have air conditioning.
Autumn and spring are the most beautiful times but even winter has many warm, blue days.
RATES
From R3,560 to R4,194 for two people per night including breakfast in peak season.
