Travel post Brexit: what will 'no deal' mean for UK passport holders?
Will British-passport holders suddenly need Schengen visas to visit Europe? We find out
Q. I am a permanent resident in SA with a British (EU) passport. I have booked a European holiday from November 18, and at present do not need a visa to enter the EU, but I am concerned about a "no-deal" Brexit and what this will mean for British-passport holders from November 1. Has the travel community any idea what will happen in this event? - Jock Fergus
A. Just as flights and ferries will keep operating after midnight on October 31, any changes affecting British-passport holders are unlikely to happen overnight as such negotiations take ages to thrash out.
According to the most recent update on Britain's gov.uk website, European Union proposals are that British-passport holders will not require visas for visits of up to 90 days within any 180-day period to any EU country.
As things stand, that is the most likely outcome for travel should the UK leave the EU without a deal on October 31.
However, the UK home office is also hedging its bets by urging travellers to keep checking for updates and notes that "when the rules are confirmed, information about how to get a visa if you need one will be on each country's travel advice page".
The post-Brexit web page is also worth a thorough read so you can be fully appraised of what to expect. See gov.uk/get-ready-brexit-check.
