'Execution' cops refused to sign suspension letters, court told

Four Krugersdorp policemen linked to the killing of Khulekani Mpanza, apparently refused to sign suspension letters served on them, the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court heard on Friday.

This was revealed during a judgment hearing on three of the officers’ bail application.

"All four of them were served with the letters... and blatantly refused to sign the letters of suspension," Prosecutor Sharon Masedi told the court.

Advocate Benedict Matlhape, who represents two of the accused, told the court the reason they had refused to sign the letters was because it happened without the presence of their union representatives.

Magistrate Keith Page wanted clarity on the matter before handing down his judgment.

Constable Titus Mabele, Constable Jason Segole and Sergeant Puleng Sebetwa face charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.

During their bail application, the three officers said they could only afford R3 000 bail because they earned less than R10 000 and had families to support.

Constable Dipuo Chipu, who is the only female officer among the accused, was granted R5 000 bail earlier this month.

Chipu was officially charged with defeating the ends of justice, while her colleagues all faced an additional charge of murder.

The Sunday Times newspaper two weeks ago reported that CCTV footage showed the police officers killing Mpanza in cold blood, after he fired shots at a police van.

Page has adjourned the matter briefly.
