Prisons team cut into large haul of booty at Westville

Prison warders have confiscated more than 400 cellphones, sim cards, drugs, weapons and even hair clippers as part of ongoing raids at Durban's notorious Westville Prison.Since the start of February a national task team has been deployed to the Medium A section of the prison, which houses awaiting-trial inmates.Sources said the intervention came amid incidents of violence including at least 20 stabbings, one of which was fatal.Last week, the Sunday Times reported that some of the instability in the section stemmed from the fact that the Correctional Services Department suspended KwaZulu-Natal regional commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele last month. However, the department has denied this.Correctional services national commissioner Zach Modise said the task team, which previously conducted operations in the Eastern Cape and the Free State, did daily unannounced search-and-seizure operations at Westville.In the past three weeks, 411 cellphones, 404 batteries, 141 phone chargers, 482 sim cards, dagga, 68 mandrax tablets and whoonga (also known as nyaope) have been found.In addition to this, 16 knives, 118 weapons, cash, bank cards, foreign currency, cigarettes, memory sticks and "hair-cutting machines" had been confiscated, said Modise, adding that two officials had been suspended...
