In Pictures: Tshwane in chaos

The ANC's decision to rope in Thoko Didiza as a compromise mayoral candidate for Tshwane has backfired - angry party members have run amok, burning buses and clashing with the police.

The unrest erupted on Monday after the ANC released the names of mayoral nominees for hotly-contested local government elections on August 3.

On Tuesday‚ police officers were called in from other areas to quell the violence that has seen vehicles being torched‚ businesses ransacked and roads blocked in Atteridgeville‚ Hammanskraal‚ Mamelodi and Garankuwa.

African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Gwede Mantashe however is adamant that the ruling party would not reverse its decision to appoint Didiza as a mayoral candidate for Tshwane.

Mantashe said the violent protests in Tshwane were not necessarily related to the appointment of Didiza - despite the fact the protests started shortly after the announcement.
