ANC wants taxpayers to pay more to political parties

'Public purse will ease funding reform'

The ANC wants the state to fork out additional funds for political parties because the regulation of funding may scare off donors.
This is was the submission of the party's treasurer-general, Zweli Mkhize, to a multi-party ad hoc committee in parliament looking into the funding of political parties.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Mkhize said party funding and transparency could not be regulated if political parties did not receive money from the public purse.
The regulation of party funding would require political parties to disclose the source of their funding. Both the ANC and the DA have for years declined to do this.
"You can't on the one side have very strict regulation, and you don't have a source [of income] on the other side. If you want to put regulation and transparency, you must know, that some people will fear [making donations]," Mkhize said.
"At the moment the party funding from parliament is very little compared to what we have to go out and raise," he said...
