Police probe cases of girls abused by their supposed protectors

For eight months, a 17-year-old KwaZulu-Natal pupil was sexually abused by a teacher so trusted by her family that they asked him to give her a lift to school every day.
But it was in that vehicle that the ordeal began, starting with "strange" questions - like if she was menstruating - and ending with the girl being raped at a Richards Bay hotel and repeatedly at the teacher's home.
The girl revealed the shocking details in a four-page statement which is being investigated by police and the provincial education department.
The teacher was arrested on rape charges after the girl alerted her mother, who had asked the man to give her daughter a lift to school because she could not afford the bus fare...
