Old ANC allies are at odds, but over what?

Oscar Mabuyane and Phumulo Masualle were once friends and ANC allies in the Eastern Cape. They were elected together in 2009, Masualle as chairman and Mabuyane as secretary, and re-elected in 2013.
Now they are on opposite sides, with roles reversed.
At a divisive and rowdy party conference a week ago, Mabuyane ousted Masualle. The two have not spoken since.
Mabuyane was elected ANC chairman while Masualle remains the provincial premier, although politically in thrall to his former ally.
Masualle and his supporters did not take their defeat well last week, leaving the conference to hold a separate gathering in East London's city hall.
This tension marked the lowest point in their relationship...
