Culture of violence damages students' legitimate protests

South Africa's universities are confronting an upsurge in student activism, inspired by two distinct discontents: insufficient funding for poor students, and the cultural alienation of black students at many historically white universities. These discontents, captured under the label of "transformation" or "decolonisation", are undeniably legitimate.
