What's the committee's position on Manana?
I do not know, because we haven't met. But we believe that anybody who perpetrates violence against women brings the ANC into disrepute.
So are you going to summon him?
Well, I don't know, because for various reasons we haven't met for three weeks.
What do you think of women's league president Bathabile Dlamini's support for him?
I don't speak for the ANC Women's League, I am not a member of it.
What do you think of Dlamini's support for Manana?
I don't think any member of the ANC should support what he has done. Nobody should be doing that.
Should Manana be dismissed?
I will not anticipate the issues that the committee will have to discuss, because we still have to discuss it.
Isn't there a need to act quickly when things like this happen?
Yes, but you must appreciate that this last month has been particularly hectic for the ANC. So, therefore, we haven't ...
Shouldn't you prioritise gender abuse?
There are lots of ways of bringing the ANC into disrepute at the moment, and we've got to deal with all of them.
Expeditiously?
Don't put words in my mouth. I cannot convene that committee when members are unavailable.
Dlamini says gender abuse is rife in the higher ranks of the ANC ...
I hope she will appear before the integrity committee and explain that. We would love to know how rife it is, and who these people are. Because they're all bringing the organisation into disrepute.
Will you be summoning her?
I don't know. But you believe she should appear before the committee?
Don't put words in my mouth.
That's a question.
We will have to consider. But the immediate case we have to consider is the deputy minister.
Dlamini says those who express outrage are playing political games.
Well I've then been playing political games for about 30 years.
Do remarks like that bring the ANC into disrepute?
I need to know exactly what she said. With respect, the media does not set our agenda.
Who does set your agenda?
The commission itself. We look at all the cases and proceed regardless of who it is. It's well known now that we asked the president to come to us.
Has the ANC used the commission to pretend it is serious about gender violence and corruption?
This is the first time we're even considering cases of gender violence.
If the ANC were serious about your role, wouldn't it give you more teeth?
Every conference of the ANC in the last years has added to our powers.
Is the integrity of the ANC today a reflection of your ineffectiveness?
No. It's about politics and running a massive organisation...
