Mampara of the week: FW de Klerk

28 April 2019 - 00:00 By Hogarth

BACKWARD LOOKING
Life was better under apartheid.
That is the gospel according to apartheid deacon FW de Klerk: "I think there is an element of truth in it, not because of race or colour but because of bad appointments made in the last nine years, blah blah yadda yadda."
Though perhaps this is not surprising, coming as it does from a person who once presided over a heinous crime against humanity.
We suggest to De Klerk that he takes a break from his busy schedule of revelling in nostalgia about that most brutal system to seek out the relatives of those who died in the Shobashobane and Boipatong massacres.
Look them in the eye and tell them that, yes, the forces of evil sponsored by his racist regime butchered their loved ones - but hey, life was better under apartheid. Sies!..
