Mampara of the week: Sebastian Coe

12 May 2019 - 00:00 By Hogarth

AN OLYMPIC-SIZE MESS
During a running career crowned by two Olympic gold medals, Sebastian Coe never had to prove he was a man. But he is a man, and that obviously gives him the right to mess with women's bodies.
Hence his support, as head of the International Association of Athletics Federations, for a decision that athletes such as SA's Caster Semenya must take testosterone suppressants if they want to compete against other women in certain events.
Semenya has made it clear she will do no such thing, and Coe's organisation was ready with its Orwellian response this week: "She would still be entitled to compete in the male classification at any competition at any level, in any discipline, without restriction."
In Coe's mamparadom of mediocrity, all athletes are equal, but some are more equal than others...
