Herbert Mabuza: Photographer of apartheid and freedom

Herbert Mabuza, who has died in Johannesburg at the age of 60, was an underground member of the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), while working as a photographer for the Sunday Times. He became the newspaper's chief photographer and later its managing editor.

He was living in Dawn Park, Boksburg, in 1993 when SACP and MK chief Chris Hani was assassinated at his home nearby. Mabuza got to the scene before the police did and took memorable pictures of the body being transported down the short driveway in a police van as armed South African Defence Force soldiers kept a wary eye on clearly stunned spectators...
