In a conversation before his death, Bra Day spoke to Bongani Madondo about getting his start as a self-made 'staffrider' artist

David Nthubu Koloane, known in the arts fraternity as "Bra Day", died last Sunday at the age of 81.

Earlier this autumn, Bra Day told me and Freedom Park curator Sipho Mdanda a story as we sat on the balcony of his Empire Road, Parktown, home in Johannesburg, nibbling koeksisters and drinking rooibos tea. It was a story about music and musicians, his self-making, his imagining and his doing-it-my-way philosophy...
