Covid-19 has brought forward the stark choice facing SA: either the governing ANC leadership continues to do everything to keep the fractious party united, damning the country to catastrophic freefall in the process, or it holds the country together by cutting off the corrupt groups from the ANC, and so splitting the party.

It is impossible to hold together the two main factions of the ANC — the Left-centrist President Cyril Ramaphosa grouping, and their opponents, the Ace Magashule and Jacob Zuma grouping — while at the same time rescuing SA’s economy, maintaining social order and political stability...
