Resorting to violence should not be part of our culture

As the second wave of Covid-19 wanes, it seems South Africans must contend with the resurgence of another familiar pandemic: a menacing increase in crime, specifically murder and rape. Our resort to violence as a form of dispute resolution or a wicked form of sport is apparent from the crime statistics for the period October to December last year, which were released this week.

More than 50,124 cases of assault were opened, more than 12,000 cases of rape were recorded, there was a 66% spike in cash-in-transit heists, a 34% rise in truck hijackings, an 8.7% rise in attempted murder, while murder rose 6.6%...
