The past week was teeming with events that could define the future. But there were also those that caused us to scan the past. Chinese leader Xi Jinping, arguably the most powerful man on the planet, in a speech marking the founding of the Chinese Communist Party, said anyone who tried to bully the country's 1.4-billion people would "crack their heads and spill blood".

In the US, former defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld died, provoking an anguished orgy of raking over the decision to invade Iraq - in which he was a prime mover - and its bloody repercussions...
