Saturday marked the 150th anniversary of the Dutch abolition of slavery. King Willem-Alexander delivered a speech in which he apologised for his country’s role in the slave trade, following in the footsteps of Prime Minister Mark Rutte. To highlight the debate that ensued over the prime minister's apology, we publish an edited extract of a speech delivered at this year’s ZAM Nelson Mandela Lecture at the Amsterdam International Theatre by Panashe Chigumadzi.
