Sam Mkokeli talks to Ismail Momoniat, outgoing acting director-general of the National Treasury

Ismail Momoniat had just completed internship stints at the Bank of England, World Bank and International Monetary Fund when he was thrust into the National Treasury in 1995. “They were just one month,” he says. “When I look back, they were too short to really prepare.” In the ANC, there had been economic policy planning and preparations, working with the likes of Tito Mboweni who later became finance minister, but “what prepares you is when you are actually in the job”...
