Tshwane’s DA mayor at the time, Solly Msimanga, might have thought he was doing a good thing by visiting Taiwan in late 2016, in an effort to drum up investor support for South Africa’s capital. But he hadn’t reckoned with the shifting sands of global geopolitics, with China emerging as a world power and earning the admiration (and obedience) of governments of developing countries around the world...
