In early May 2009, after South Africa’s national and provincial elections, the country’s most incisive political cartoonist and satirist, Jonathan Shapiro — known to most by his nom de plume, Zapiro — penned a curiously optimistic cartoon of the country’s recently elected president, Jacob Zuma. Featured in this paper’s sister publication, The Times, Zapiro’s cartoon depicted a shower head detached from and floating above Zuma’s head with a label attached to it reading “Temporary suspension”.  ..
