Liverpool eye the Premier League top spot again

17 March 2019 - 00:00 By Reuters and AFP

Riding the crest of a wave after their superb victory over Bayern Munich, Liverpool have the perfect opportunity to edge back in front in a titanic Premier League title race at struggling Fulham today.
Jurgen Klopp's Reds have the chance to sneak two points clear of Pep Guardiola's side with victory at Craven Cottage. While City would then have a game in hand, points in the bag at this stage of a title run-in, especially with big Champions League clashes looming on the horizon, can be a huge advantage.
Klopp said before Wednesday's Champions League last-16 clash in Munich that victory could "change the world" for his team - rather than hinder their domestic title bid.
And the way they controlled the Bundesliga giants for a 3-1 victory will give them a massive surge of confidence.
"It is a fantastic sign that we again set a mark for LFC, for this wonderful club, that we really are back on the landscape on international, top-class football," Klopp said. The only slight concern was an ankle injury sustained by skipper Jordan Henderson that means the midfielder will miss the trip.
Midfielder Henderson went off early in Liverpool's last-16 second-leg clash at Bayern Munich on Wednesday which Klopp's side won 3-1 to reach the quarterfinals of Europe's elite club competition.
The 28-year-old has been named in the England squad for this month's European Championship qualifiers.
"The international break will be long enough to bring him back," Klopp said.
"It was a little one with the ankle. It was the best scan we could get but still not good enough. Not good but OK." Fellow midfielder Naby Keita faces a fitness test to be in contention for the clash at 19th-placed Fulham.
"With Naby we have to see if he can train today. Checks were positive but we have to see if it stays positive," Klopp added.
Yet even without Henderson it is hard to see a relegation-bound Fulham side beaten in nine of their last 10 Premier League matches causing too many problems.
Victory will lift Liverpool into top spot with 76 points, two points above champions Manchester City who are involved in the FA Cup. Manchester City will have a game in hand, but Klopp pointed out that they could face a tough run-in with games against Tottenham Hotspur and local rivals Manchester United in April...
