A police investigation team has interviewed several witnesses to the deadly brawl after Saturday's Sharks-Melbourne Rebels Super15 rugby match at King's Park Stadium, Durban.

No one has been arrested for the killing of UK visitor, Brett Williams, 29, a former Royal Marine.

"The motive is unknown. Durban Central police are investigating," KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said yesterday.

Witnesses say that Williams, a maritime security officer, was attacked after walking away from an altercation at the stadium at about 10pm.

A group of men described as "brawny" followed him and beat him severely.

Witnesses said security guards tried to stop the gang but they continued to kick and punch Williams before walking away.

Williams suffered head injuries and was declared dead on the scene.

Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl said: "We have conducted our internal investigations and are satisfied that our contracted service providers had done everything possible to stop the fight."

Williams, who had served with the marines in Iraq and Afghanistan, had planned to travel to Johannesburg on Saturday to visit relatives.

He was born in South Africa. The family moved to Liverpool, northern England, when he was a child.
