A new Disney channel aimed mainly at boys is being launched in South Africa today by the Walt Disney Company and local television company MultiChoice.

Disney XD is a multi-platform brand that will screen a mix of live action and animated programmes for kids aged between 6 and 14.

Vice-president of Disney Maciej Bral says it is a strategic addition to the popular Disney children's channels, which launched in South Africa in 2006.

"Since its global launch in 2009 Disney XD has been a phenomenal success. Over the past 20 months, we have launched 14 Disney XD channels across Europe, Middle East and Africa and we are proud to be launching Disney XD in South Africa," says Bral.

The channel will screen Phineas & Ferb, Zeke, The Avengers, Luther, I'm in the Band and Kick Buttowski, among others.

The programme line-up also includes movies, series and short stories.

Young viewers will be able to tune in to the channel between 5am and 10pm seven days a week.
