Christopher L Huggins is in South Africa to restage his award-winning ballet Enemy Behind the Gates . This is what the US choreographer has to say:

The ballet Enemy Behind the Gates is a look into the minds of terrorists - how they live quietly and patiently in the shadows before they strike.

I was inspired to create this ballet by my world travels . I noticed a military presence in airports everywhere, except in the US. This was before 9/11. The show premiered on September 8 2001 .

The style of the piece is clean and fast- moving, a fusion of contemporary ballet and modern movement. It's an exciting, confrontational work created in a militaristic style.

Finding the right music was difficult, but I was lucky to come across the riveting work of Steve Reich.

My most embarrassing moment on stage was when I forgot a movement.

The South African ballet scene is full of talent and spirit. To upcoming local choreographers I say: 'Be daring'.

My proudest moment on stage was when I won a choreography award from peers.

  •  'Enemy Behind the Gates' is on at The Dance Factory, Johannesburg, this weekend . And at the Artscape Theatre, Cape Town from November 30 until December 11.
