Honouring Afrikaans music.

Afrikaans songwriters, singers, musicians, bands, record companies and anyone else related to the industry can all look forward to the inaugural Ghoema 2012.

The newly-introduced independent Afrikaans music awards will take place at the Carnival City Big Top Arena in Brakpan.

Performing will be the likes of Jay, Lianie May, Juanita du Plessis, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Nicholis Louw and Ray Dylan.

The Awards seek to honour players in the Afrikaans music industry for their contribution and performance excellence during the past year.

The Ghoema Awards have been named after the original Cape Malay slaves whose rich and colourful heritage found expression through music and live performances as Cape Minstrel troops.

According to organiser Barry Pretorius: “The Ghoemas are completely independent and not aligned to any person or organisation and so can fairly represent the entire industry.

“We hope to someday be as big a force in music as are the Grammys and SAMAs.”  Afrikaans performers of all genre’s and music styles are welcome to be part of the Ghoema Awards.
