Is South Africa’s rainbow nation a myth? What does race mean to South Africans in 2016?
These are some of the questions explored in a powerful new MTV documentary, The People versus the Rainbow Nation, which puts the country’s democracy on trial by focusing on its youth.
The 50-minute film follows the lives of four students from different backgrounds as it investigates the driving factors behind the #FeesMustFall movement. Director Lebogang Rasethaba speaks to these youths about the idea of a “rainbow nation” and other tough topics.

Rasethaba says: "We wanted to make a film that we wished someone had made when we were young – to help us make sense of the construct of society, [and to show us] how to engage the systems of power at play and where we as individuals fit in all of this.”
The People vs the Rainbow Nation will be broadcast on Thursday April 21 on MTV (DStv channel 130) at 9.15pm and on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) on April 27 at 12pm.
