As South African's reflect on the 1976 Soweto Student Uprisings, TV personality Hulisani Ravele has written a poignant blog post about the importance of the day and what it means to her.

Hulisani starts off by acknowledging that she has been fortunate in life to attend model-c schools and had she not had that education, the opportunities that she has today might not have been.

Like many South Africans Hulisani asks pertinent questions: "How does one salute those who took a stand and made their voices heard? So clearly. So loudly. So profoundly."

She says as a young South African she believes the best way to do justice to those who gave their lives for freedom is to work hard and be all that one can be.

"It’s by recognising, acknowledging, and constantly reminding ourselves of the opportunities we are fortunate enough to have access to because of the young heroes of June 16, 1976.  And please, understand that I am by no means ignoring or overlooking that fact that not all of us are in this position."

  • Hulisani: I was teased for my frecklesPopular TV personality Hulisani Ravele is perhaps most recognisable for her trademark freckles, but in a lengthy social media statement this week she revealed that it once was the reason for her being teased in school.

She explains that many young people are just focused on the glitz and glam of life, but says that it shouldn't consume a person.

"Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with celebrating the fact that you are young and aspiring to possess certain things, but, when this good time consumes you and becomes ALL that you dream of, live for, and strive for, then something ain’t right fam."
