Though it boasts an upbeat backdrop, the lyrics on DJ Merlon's ''Sonini" - sung by Unathi Msengana - are hardly of little depth. So, it all came together when the TV and radio personality revealed that she was in a "very dark place'' when she recorded the song.

Taking to Instagram, Unathi opened up about being in low spirits when she was approached to provide the vocals of Sonini.

"I was in a VERY VERY dark place when I recorded Sonini," she wrote alongside a picture of herself on the set of the song's music video shoot.

"When @djmerlon asked me to collabo with him, I didn't know what to expect but prayed for the voice and emotion to make him happy because I couldn't tell him I was weak."

She further revealed that DJ Merlon and producer Mondli Ngcobo opened the doors for her to to express her pain through the song on the day of recording.

"The day we were recording @djmerlon and @mondlingco, sat me down and said 'we know you're in a lot of pain and we are not gonna let you run from it. Let it out and surrender to it so you can grow.'

"And so Sonini was born," she explained, before thanking the two producers for helping her through the tough time.

  • Fikile Mbalula: Artists should have a heart and conscienceIt’s a long-standing debate: does an artist’s performance at a political rally or event mean that they are in support of the party?

Seemingly in better spirits, Unathi claimed that Sonini has since "healed" her in another post, adding "I'm glad we can spread that energy."
