While many people were deeply moved by Jesse Williams' speech at the BET awards late last month, which poignantly addressed police brutality, cultural appropriation, and institutional racism - Wendy Williams wasn't one of them.
The talk show host found herself coming under fire after making some controversial comments on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP), and Jesse's much-talked about acceptance speech at the 2016 BET Awards.
Igniting a great deal of outrage on social media, Wendy expressed her disapproval of the NAACP and HBCUs while addressing the petition currently circulating about firing Jesse from Grey’s Anatomy. She explained that she sees both sides of the story, claiming that both institutions make white people feel excluded.
"I must say to you, he was on BET. His speech was very poignant. On the other hand I would be really offended if there was a school that was known as a historically white college. We have historically black colleges. What if there was the National Organization for White People, only? There’s the NAACP," she said.
Subsequently, Twitter users called foul on Wendy's argument that "Historically White Colleges" would offend her, and pointed out that - with the exception of HBCUs - colleges and universities in the US are literally historically white.
Revisiting the topic of HBCUs, she once again stated: "National speeches like this will always rub people the wrong way just like white people will be offended because Spelman College is a historically Black college for women.
"You might feel funny about that. I know I’d feel funny, like I just told you. If there was a white college or whatever."
